Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian has decided to resign from his position of the Reddit board to fight for racial equality. He stated that he hopes that his role will be filled with an African American candidate. In a powerful Instagram message, Ohanian stated that he made this decision “for me, for my family, and for my country”.
“I’m saying this as a father who needs to be able to answer his Black daughter when she asks: ‘What did you do?’ I have resigned as a member of the Reddit board. I have urged them to fill my seat with a Black candidate, and I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the Black community, chiefly to curb racial hate, and I’m starting with a pledge of $1 Million to @Kaepernick7’s @yourrightscamp”, he stated.
Ohanian made this decision a week after the murder of George Floyd who was killed after a police officer put his knee on his neck for nine minutes. His death has sparked national, state, and local protests and conversations about racial injustices that the Black community faces.
