Girl groups have been reemerging in the past few years. From Fifth Harmony and Little Mix who gained success after being put together on the X-Factor, to the comeback and renaming of Xscape, it is apparent that the world has been missing the girl power! However, some elements still missing from girl groups today are the soulful and powerful vocals of that we came to love from groups in the 90s and early 2000s. This is where June’s Diary comes in. This talented group of women were put together by Kelly Rowland and Frank Gatson on BETs Chasing Destiny. It should be no surprise that a woman who comes from one of the biggest girl groups of all time would have an eye—or ear for putting together a group whose talent is unmatched in current music. The group consisting of Kristal Lyndriette Smith, Ashly Williams, Brienna DeVlugt, Gabrielle “Gabby” Carreiro and Shyann Roberts, have been working nonstop to create an EP that will leave fans blown away by showcasing how talented they truly are.
I had the pleasure of attending their concert last Wednesday at Vinyl on West Peachtree and let me tell you—I was not disappointed. These five women sure do know how to put on a show! They sang a mix of both covers and original songs that had all of the audience singing along. Fellow singer, Alexis Branch, both hosted the event and sung a few songs of her own. The other opening acts included a Detroit-based girl group named DMK and Just Brittany. The night left me feeling empowered as a woman and anxiously awaiting any future releases from the group.
