Brittney Griner is an American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of (WNBA) Women’s National Basketball Association. Brittney was arrested on February 17th at the Moscow airport after a vape cartridge allegedly containing hash oils were found during a baggage search. ESPN claims, she was charged with illegal crossing of a customs border with illegal narcotics, and she can possible face up to 10 years in prison. Griner sent a handwritten letter to the White House, pleading that President Joe Biden does not forget about her as she has been behind bars in Russia for five months now.
“As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I might be here forever,” Griner wrote in an open letter obtained by E! News through the WNBA star’s publicist. Brittney also detailed the thoughts that cross her mind, writing, “…as I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I’m terrified I might be here forever.”
She continued, “On the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War Veteran,” the letter read. “It hurts thinking about how I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year.”
“I miss my wife!” she wrote. “I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It kills me to know they are suffering so much right now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home.”
