There has been a conspiracy theory online surrounding a potential missing person and whether or not it is real.
The person in question is meant to be a young girl named Gracie Mae Thompson, and her picture has been going viral across social media; but not for reasons that this would suggest.
Many of those that have seen the post have questioned why news outlets haven’t mentioned the case, or why police haven’t reported it either.
The posts have often appeared on Facebook with a photo of a teenage girl, along with a further description of what she looks like such as her height, weight and hair colour.
The Facebook posts says that the missing 15 year old was last seen in Texas in July 2024, along with an urgent plea to help find her.
It has been going around social media many times, often with a different variation of spelling such as ”Graci May Thompson” or Gracie Mae Thompson”, as well as the use of emojis and emotive language to grab the attention of the public.
The most important detail as to why many think it is a scam is because often the posts include a link which leads on to suspicious or unfamiliar websites and fails to include details as to where to contact anyone who may know something of said missing girl.
The ‘case’ of Grace Mae Thompson seems as though it may be more of a ‘phishing scam’ rather than an actual missing persons case.
A phishing scam is most commonly known as something that scammers will use to entice people via emails, links and text messages to find out important information such as bank details or download a virus onto your computer.
