Britney Spears’ dad files to end the conservatorship

James Spears

James P. Spears, the father of Britney Spears, filed a petition this week asking the court to finally end the conservatorship over the finances and almost entire control of his daughter’s life.

Mr. Spear had been insistent over maintaining the guardianship of her daughter, imposed 13 years ago. At that time, there were concerns over Britney’s mental health and possible drug use.

Earlier this summer he said he would eventually step down from his role in the conservatorship

“As Mr. Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter,” Vivian Lee Thoreen, Mr. Spears’ lawyer, wrote in the new filing. “If Ms. Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr. Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

Nonetheless, Britney has not yet filed her own formal petition to end the conservatorship; she has asked the judge to remove her father as conservator of her estate. Her father has not served as her personal conservator since September 2019, when Jodi Montgomery, a licensed professional conservator, took over on an ongoing temporary basis.

In a statement, Mathew Rosengart, Britney’s lawyer, called the filing “vindication” for Ms. Spears.

“Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, he is incorrect and our investigation into financial mismanagement and other issues will continue,” Mr. Rosengart said.

But the new filing in court says that Jamie wants a smooth and transparent transition off the helm and will “hide nothing” from anyone hoping to sneak a peek at the inner workings of the historical arrangement.
